Lake Rotoroa Lodge

Climate
Temperatures can generally range from the low 70s up to the mid-90s (20° to 35°C).

  • We advise that slacks should be worn out on the flats as opposed to shorts.
Slacks/shorts: 2 or 3 pairs, lightweight cotton or synthetic.
  • Long-sleeved shirts: for sun and insect protection in a light colour and fabric.
  • Fleece pullover or jacket for cool mornings and evenings, and “running”
    in the boat.
  • Shoes: 1 pair rubber-soled, non-slip boat shoes, canvas sneakers or sandals.
We highly recommend that all those who plan to wade wear saltwater wading boots.
  • Fishing hat: should have long front visor with dark under bill (enhances polarizing qualities of sunglasses) and it must shade face, neck and ears.
  • Sunscreen: It is very important that waterproof sunscreen of at least SPF 30 be applied to every square inch of exposed skin including your lips. Remember that the sun will reflect off the water and can burn your face even if you wear a wide-brimmed hat.
  • Polaroid sunglasses: It is vital to have a high quality pair of Polaroid sunglasses and a spare pair too. Be sure that your lens colour is brown based (amber or brown are excellent; avoid grey and green) as these tints produce the best visibility on the Caribbean flats.
  • Lightweight waterproof jacket essential for running in the boat and the occasional rain.

Access and Getting There
Mangrove Cay enjoys twice-daily commercial air service from Nassau to the Clarence A. Bain Airport via Western Air and Caribbean Aviation. Charter service can be arranged from south Florida or Nassau, Bahamas. Private planes are also welcome at Mangrove Cay and the 5,000 by 75 foot (1,524 by 23 m) asphalt runway can accommodate most private aircraft. While there is no Bahamian customs currently available on Mangrove Cay, anglers choosing to travel by private aircraft or charter from the US can find ports of entry on North and South Andros as well as Nassau, Bimini or Chubb Cay. You will be met at the airport and driven to Mangrove Cay Club, a journey of ten minutes.

Travel Documents
****NOTE****
As of January 1, 2006, it will be mandatory to have a valid passport to enter the Bahamas.  Birth certificates will no longer be accepted for entry.

A valid passport (check expiration date). Be sure to have documents with you. No visa is required for US or UK citizens. Residents of other countries should contact their Bahamas consulate. Please note that there is a US$15 Bahamian departure tax payable at the airport on departure.

Customs
Those entering the Bahamas are allowed to bring free of duty 1 carton of cigarettes or 50 cigars and 1 quart of liquor per person. Travellers are not permitted to take fresh fruits or vegetables into the country.

Health Concerns
No inoculations are required. Travellers to the Bahamas seldom report stomach problems, but some people are especially prone to traveller’s diarrhoea. It is a good idea to have your doctor prescribe an antibiotic that is effective against this kind of bacteria. Some antibiotics increase sun sensitivity; it is important to let your doctor know you will be spending days in direct sunlight. Be sure to pack medications you normally need.

Airport Arrival
Refer to your agent’s itinerary for instructions on meeting the transfer to the lodge.

Electrical Current
There is 24-hour electric service (110 volts/50 cycles) identical to US power.

Currency
The US dollar is accepted throughout the Bahamas.

Gratuities
We recommend a tip of $40-$50/day/boat for the guides and $15/night/guest for the house staff.
